Forrest Keeling's RPM-produced Peterson Pawpaws

Superior production for tastiest pawpaws!

Hernando DeSoto discovered the tree in 1541.William Bartram praised its fruit in 1776 as did Lewis and Clark in their Journey of Discovery. And in 2000, Better Homes and Gardens voted it landscape tree of the year. This often forgotten native tree is the Pawpaw, Asimina triloba (L.). With its delicious fruit and tropical-looking foliage, it is a unique candidate for any landscape that offers a moist, shady site.

Interestingly, the Pawpaw was not propagated extensively until the mid-1970s when Neil Peterson stumbled across an interesting story. Peterson found that a number of early 20th century Pawpaw breeders had identified and named several Midwest varieties. He tracked down the old collections and, the rest, as they say, is history.

After more than 20 years of selecting and evaluation, Neil Peterson had developed six outstanding varieties of patented Pawpaw. And, until 2009, horticultural aficionados could only obtain these premium trees directly from Peterson. But, beginning this season, Peterson has agreed to allow Forrest Keeling to represent his patented Pawpaws. Beginning Fall 2009, we will proudly offer five, patented Peterson varieties that we believe to be the best of the best. Our varieties are: Shenandoah, Susquehanna, Allegheny, Potomac and Wabash.

Our website plant record can give you more information about Pawpaws. Each Pawpaw variety we offer--including the true native--is known for its firm, fleshy delicious fruit with creamy texture.

Our Pawpaw specimens begin as one-year grafts on three-year-old seedling rootstock and are produced with Forrest Keeling's patented RPM system. Supplies are limited and sell out fast!
